Support the Santa Monica Symphony

September, 2001

Dear Friend of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra:

Welcome to the 2001/2002 season of the Santa Monica Symphony!

This year brings the return of two acclaimed soloists. Vatche Mankerian will join us for our traditional Beethoven opener with the grand Emperor Concerto. Our second concert in December brings the return of llmar Gavilan as soloist in the dazzling Second Violin Concerto of Wieniawski. Our second concert also includes the romantic Romeo and Juliet of Tchaikovsky. We will also offer the December concert via broadcast in partnership with Santa Monica CityTV. We look forward to this very special opportunity to offer this performance to an even brooder audience.

We usually reserve our March concert for our blockbuster program and this year is no exception. The program features the William Tell Overture, Siegfried's Funeral Music of Wagner and the great Symphony No. 15 by Shostakovich. Make sure you attend our preconcert lecture for this program as the three pieces on the program share a musical bond, but I'll leave that to you to figure out the common thread.

Finally, we end the season with the Concerto for Piccolo and Chamber Orchestra by Bruce Broughton. While Mr. Broughton has received numerous Emmy and Oscar nominations for his film scores, he also has an impressive body of classical music to his credit. Susan Greenberg joins us as soloist on the Broughton concerto. Our final concert concludes with the rousing Italian Symphony of Mendelssohn.

We hope you will join us for all our concerts this season with the thought in mind that while our concerts remain free of charge, we continue to rely on your financial support to sustain our programming. I hope you'll take a moment to fill out the enclosed reply card and return it with your tax-deductible contribution to the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra.

I look forward to seeing you this season!

Sincerely,
David Bendett President, Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors
