Mahnaz Newman
Board member Mahnaz Newman, founder of Friends of the Santa Monica Symphony

Dear Friends and supporters of the Santa Monica Symphony,

The orchestra that we have loved all these years is celebrating its 60th season. It is a testament to your support that we get to observe such an important milestone. Let us salute the orchestra and wish it many more successful seasons.

This orchestra was formed 60 years ago by musicians who were dedicated to their art and needed an outlet for their talent. "The success of the Santa Monica symphony, which was one of the first community orchestras, was later emulated, and today there are scores of community orchestras in the Southland," to quote from a history Raoul Gripenwaldt wrote in 1982.

Today, you are witnessing the strong performances by this orchestra thanks to the same kind of serious artists. The orchestra members create these concerts by donating their time, their artistry and in many ways their financial support. Many members of the Friends of the Santa Monica Symphony appear on the stage to bring you these magnificent concerts.

Those of us who are lovers of classical music must do our share to keep this wonderful orchestra thriving against the backdrop of budget cuts and a challenging environment for musical standards. I may be repeating the obvious but it a point worth repeating. Free concerts to the community are not free of cots and costs keep rising. Your financial support is needed now more than ever.

After all, the Friends group is the bedrock of individual support upon which the orchestra must depend. In three short years we have significantly increased contributions from individual donors giving $250 and above, both in the size and in the number of gifts. Contributions from generous individual donors are all the more critical as government and institutional support, our mainstay in the past, becomes less and less dependable.

By forming Friends three years ago, we have tried to show our appreciation to donors whose generosity has helped the orchestra not only to survive but also to plan more ambitious programs. We felt that by creating social settings in which Friends can interact with orchestra members and with each other, we could establish closer ties between supporters and musicians. The post-concert receptions, beautifully arranged through the generous support of some of the best Santa Monica hotels, were pleasant settings in which Friends and members of the orchestra could come together.

Our goal this year is to have a program of at home events for Friends. These events would give us a chance to get to know one another, and enjoy musical performances or lectures. We would love to hear from those of you who would like to help out with this program.

I offer my sincere appreciation to our Friends and other supporters of the orchestra, and wish the Santa Monica Symphony a very happy Sixtieth Anniversary.
