Congratulations!
The Santa Monica Symphony is proud to announce that it has been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. A prestigious American Reinvestment and Recovery Act grant partially funds this concert. An Access to Artistic Excellence grant will partially fund outreach and children's music education programs during the 2009-2010 concert season.

Thank You
Thank you, Santa Monica Rotary Club Foundation, for your generous grant that allowed us to complete our set of sound baffles for the stage.

Friends of the Santa Monica Symphony

Friends of the Santa Monica Symphony was formed to give the orchestra the kind of sustained support that only an organized group can offer. Groups are more effective in fundraising and in promoting the ideals of the orchestra. The life of any cultural organization depends on its relationship with the world around it. As a support group, Friends can create greater awareness of the wonderful work of the Santa Monica Symphony. By expanding our audience base and developing a larger following we can perpetuate support for the orchestra.

By forming Friends we also hope to do more for the supporters of the Symphony. Friends are offered benefits that show our appreciation. Participating in social events hosted by Friends lets our supporters know that they are not alone in their loyalty and giving and offers them a chance to interact with other like-minded music lovers. Becoming a Friend gives our supporters other opportunities to help the Santa Monica Symphony. They may have other resources they want to offer, be it their time, their talent, or circumstances that can benefit the orchestra. By having a chance to meet orchestra members and attend talks and lectures given by our musical director Allen Gross and other invited lecturers, Friends will have a closer sense of the artistic aspects of the Santa Monica Symphony, and in turn can be more effective ambassadors.

Please visit the information table located in the lobby area of the auditorium or call (310) 395-6330.

The Santa Monica Symphony's
Jordan Kaplan & Shoba Srinivasan Memorial Fund

Jordan Kaplan and Shoba Srinivasan were violinists in the Santa Monica Symphony who lost their lives in a plane crash in March 1997. The Symphony established a memorial fund in their names. Family and friends made donations to the fund to honor their memories and to benefit the musical organization that Jordan and Shoba loved so much.

The Board of Directors has designated the memorial fund to be used as the "Conductor's Discretionary Fund," for special concert events. As music director, Allen Gross may utilize these discretionary funds to enhance the programming capabilities of the Symphony.

The symphony operates on a tight budget, with little discretionary resources. Expenses for the four concerts each season (including fees for soloists, professional musicians, rental of the hall and other equipment) consume most of the orchestra's financial resources. Budgetary constraints have a significant impact on the choice of repertoire, soloists and concert schedules.

The Memorial Fund will allow Maestro Gross to program works which the orchestra would otherwise be financially unable to produce. The first such work planned was Mahler's "Das Lied Von de Erde" in the 1999-2000 concert season. The memorial fund will be acknowledged in the program whenever it is used to support a concert.

The symphony is planning a number of fund raising activities to enable the Memorial Fund to be used in a self-sustaining manner. If you are interested in helping to raise donations for the fund contact ( webmaster@smsymphony.org ), or phone the Symphony Association at 310-996-3260. Donations to the fund should be payable to the "Santa Monica Symphony Association," and marked "For the Jordan Kaplan & Shoba Srinivasan Memorial Fund."

The Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra would like to extend its deepest appreciation to all of its donors.
