Michael Chwe is professor and former department chair of the UCLA political science department, where he has taught since 2001. Michael’s books include Rational Ritual (2001), selected by Facebook for its Year of Books in 2015, and Jane Austen, Game Theorist (2013), reviewed in the New York Times, the BBC, the Times Literary Supplement, and Vogue. Michael’s recent musical activities include playing violin in the Santa Monica Symphony since 2015 and the Vicente Chamber Orchestra, and singing tenor in the Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles (C3LA) and the Nova Vocal Ensemble. In 2019, Michael sang with the UCLA Chamber Singers on a recording that received the Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance. Michael has also built lithophones (like a xylophone, but with stone bars) that have been played in orchestras across Europe.
